The culture that makes up the elementary school where I teach is very diverse. Our school is in rural Oregon and includes roughly 60% Latino, over 30% are learning English as their second language, and roughly 70% are considered low income and receive free or reduced lunch. The students in my kindergarten class reflect this diversity. Each of them, one of them, however, comes to school with a smile on his/her face, eager to learn, and excited to meet his/her goal of learning to read and write. There are many great resources out there that, if made available, would help them to meet this goal. It would also help me to meet my goal of making their first year of school fun and keeping the love of learning installed in each of them.
