Hi. I work in an impoverished area in Los Angeles: Panorama City. My students are largely second-language learners who all receive free lunch. As a generalization, these kids are super sweet. Many of them come from families that have not prioritized education probably because survival has been number one on their radar. While middle class kids seem to extend their education outside of the classroom--by reading at home, by going to a museum, by attending a cultural event--my students' education is often crammed into the 6-hour school day. They go home to cramped apartments and delve into video games or television. My focus on reading has to do with wanting them to continue their learning outside of our classroom. Last year, with the help of generous donations of others, a good handful of my students genuinely learned to love to read. Nothing could have made me happier or prouder. I hope to continue to foster this love with your help.
