Third graders love to read books independently. They are just transitioning from learning to decode the words in picture books to independently reading chapter books. I pride myself in having a very print-rich environment which allows for a great variety of choice. However, my classroom library is lacking in books with diverse characters. Students who can see themselves in the characters they read about make deeper connections to what they read and, therefore, have deeper comprehension. The best way to increase reading achievement is to read more. This allows them to become better readers while learning about diverse characters and life experiences. These books will engage and excite my young readers. As with all great books, I hope they will inspire good and understanding, as well as learning.
