I teach at a school in Southern CA. My students are wonderful! For the most part, they love my class and enjoy learning about the past. Our students come from families that struggle to provide the basics for their kids. Over 80% of our children receive free or reduced lunch and many come to school without the basic supplies necessary to succeed. In the past 11 years while working at this school, I have taught many students from the same family or extended family and seen the continuing struggles of these families. I've struggled to help students whose parents have lost their jobs, been deported or in jail. Some of my students have lost their parents through death or other circumstances and have had to live in foster homes. I even have some who are homeless. It is exhilarating to work with students who face so many obstacles thrive and learn. It is a testament to the strength of the human spirit!
