Our school is an urban school in the Northeast. Most of the students in the school receive free and reduced lunch. Some students travel by car to surrounding towns, and many travel by bus around the city. But most of my students have not traveled out-of-state. Museums and theaters are close-by, but they don't visit. Some students have computers at home, and many do not. Going to the public library is something they are allowed to do with adult supervision only, and this is rare for them. Needless to say, these students' experience is limited. They want to visit a college to see what it is we are talking about when we tell them that our aim as educators is to make them college-ready. Reading a grade-level news magazine every week will increase their reading skills as they learn about the vast world outside of their city. I want my students to have tangible dreams. Knowing what is possible is the first step.
