My students are predominantly English Language Learners. Most of them are on the free lunch program due to their family income level. Many of my kindergarteners came into my classroom with no exposure to literature or writing utensils. It is a tough job to help bring these children up to grade level. Our school is staffed with wonderful and committed teachers who are dedicated to helping our students bridge the gap in their education. We work hard to create a sense of community for our families through extra activities in the evenings. My students love when we use our math manipulatives. I know many of my students do not have many toys to play with at home, and our materials in our classroom provide a chance for my students to incorporate fun into math. Research that shows that math literature, and class discussions about math provide deeper inquiry and better understanding of math concepts.
