Our school has a robust independent reading program, but I don't have enough high interest texts in my classroom. Relevant books at an accessible reading level are key to enagaging reluctant readers. My request also includes headphones, because several of my students benefit from listening to audiobooks while they follow along with the text. Other students, those who struggle with ADHD, enjoy sitting on a stability ball while reading, so they can rock or bounce as they focus on the text. Books like The Hate U Give, The Bluford Series, and other pieces of contemporary urban fiction, get my students turning pages as they read about characters who live lives similar to their own. My students spend 25 minutes per day engaged in sustained silent reading and these materials will help them increase their reading levels significantly this year.
