Our school recently completed construction of a new building. This new construction includes designated green space set aside to be utilized as a garden. We are looking to cultivate this space as a vegetable garden and pollinator oasis. I literally have a blank slate to work with. As the school science teacher, I would conduct classes outdoors on the process of starting a garden, and the importance of the different members of the ecosystem. An urban school garden will allow my students to experience for themselves the cultivation of a working garden and the connection between what we grow and what we eat. I have a grow table in my science lab to start seedlings and have recently been gifted with a set of containers to begin the garden, and now we are in need of supplies to get the party started. There are several parent volunteers who have offered to help with planning and manual labor. The maintenance and enjoyment of the garden will be an ongoing project for the school community.
