Currently, I teach an English as a second language classes at a high poverty title 1 school. The students have supportive parents, but the majority of the parents are unable to help their children at home because of their limited English. Although my fifth graders face many challenges everyday, they are determined to succeed in learning their academics and English. Hurricane Harvey has effected them in a variety of ways- from losing their own housing to taking in additional people in their home. However, they attend school everything with a huge smile on their face. Their positive energy pushes me to provide the best learning environment that will accommodate all their needs and learning styles.
