I work in a low-income, inner-city school with limited funding and am trying desperately to captivate my students' attention and scaffold their learning experiences in a manner that will hopefully inspire a life-long love of learning and reading, much like myself. I teach reading, writing, math, science, and social studies to a wonderful group of first graders, but some are floundering between a Kindergarten and First Grade reading level because of the vast differences in prior knowledge being ascertained before entering their respective Kindergarten classrooms last year, and then being pushed up to the next grade irregardless of their reading readiness or the meeting of their promotion requirements...because the law does not yet mandate that the students attend Kindergarten.
