How do you turn first graders into readers? You provide them with high-interest, engaging books that are on their reading levels. In my class, my students are expected to read 20-40 minutes a day. Access to interesting books of various reading levels is a must in keeping adolescents engaged in reading and growing a love for reading. My dream is for students to struggle to make a book choice not because there is not anything they want to read, but because there are so many books they want to try. My goal as a teacher is to make kids better readers, and I am able to do that when I can provide students with great books that interest them and books that are on their reading level.
