Girls are rock stars too! I teach twenty third to fifth grade students in the inner-city. I started a guitar program last year for underprivileged students who are subject to negative influences. These kids try very hard despite being affected by gang violence, drug abuse, unstable home lives, and little encouragement to go to college. Last year we had around four girls who were interested in guitars, but we did not have any. This year, ten of our students are girls, and we need to excite them about playing the electric guitar. These students in our program are mostly first generation immigrants of Latino heritage, and twenty percent is of African American heritage. We have no music program at our school, and guitar is probably the first instrument these kids have touched. I would like to inspire the students in my class to write songs, play lead guitar, and have them take center stage.
