I have a class full of the most energetic, happy, and loving 1st graders. I have one autistic student with the best personality and smile you could ever see. My students are African-American and attend a Title one school where over 90% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. 30% of my class is not reading on grade level but they are steadily approaching. My students live in an area where crime is on the rise, however they are super resilient. They love school and they love to learn new things. Many of my students find it difficult to stay focused, attentive and on task. They struggle to complete their assignments on time and this is beginning to effect their grades. In addition, a few of my students do not have the support of their parents to help them with their homework on a daily basis. In spite of this however, I can see how these students try to do it on their own which is always inspiring. They want to do better and they try every day.
