My students have all been in the country less than two months from a myriad of places around the world. They are kind, respectful, and scared everyday facing high school courses with little to no language proficiency in English. We are a school committed to a culture of acceptance and learning for all, so we bring learning to them in anyway we need to. I am an English teacher, but I worry that they need assistance understanding their history classes. This project will provide them with additional understanding of a significant event in history, while developing their reading and writing skills. I try to bring my students literature that they can relate to in their own lives. I want them exposed to young people that were resilient in their lives, so they will learn the necessary skill of resiliency. We are fortunate to have students in a situation where most parents respect and honor the school system, but we often lack individual funds to make our lessons shine brightly.
