My school is in the heart of a very high poverty area. Each student enrolled in our school receives a free breakfast and free lunch to help ensure that they are eating at least two meals a day. Our school has set up a food pantry that we offer to the community every week. Our students will meet their parents there to get the food they will be eating at home. The demand on the food pantry was so great that our students now work together to maintain a fruit and vegetable garden right here on campus. The food that they grow is donated to the food pantry. Most of my students come from homes that speak only languages other than English. Outside of school many of my students are speaking languages they are not learning in, while trying to learn and study so that they can be successful in our room. I try to meet each individual student's needs; however with many students who do not speak any English at all, it is hard to meet their needs. For my students I am the only support that they have.
