My classroom is a 6:1:1 special education classroom in Flushing, NY. My students are 6-7 years old, and diagnosed on the autism spectrum. Most of our instruction is done during a one to one direct instructional period, while other students work on their mastered skills independently. Some students complete their work, and practice previously learned skills on the computer, through educational software and games. My students with autism can become distracted with extraneous noises, making it difficult for them to stay focused. Also, many of my students require prompting and support to stay on task. My students are highly motivated by technology such as the computer, iPad, and Smartboard. They take a leadership role and actively participate in their learning, when it involves using the technology, because they think they are "playing". This proves that learning can be fun!
