The Soviet Union still exists -- on this very old globe in my school. I teach English Language Learners in grades 4-5. Six classrooms share this one globe, which sometimes spins off its axis. I teach in a high poverty school: 91% of our students qualified for Free and Reduced Lunches during the 2012-13 school year. This school year, 63% of the 4th and 5th graders qualify for English Language Learner (ELL) services. Most students have a good knowledge of everyday English. However, in order to succeed in school, all students need to excel in academic English. In particular, students need added support in the vocabulary of social studies, beginning with geography. The students have many necessary resources -- a dedicated and caring staff, community partnerships, necessary curricular materials and school supplies. Unfortunately, there are limited funds available for enrichment extras, such as classroom globes.
