My classroom has developed and maintained a clothing closet for grades 9th - 12th grade students for the last few years. The clothing closet is stocked with donations from the community, as well as uniforms that we collect from graduating seniors. This closet is frequented by students who do not have items that they need, most of the time because the clothing that they have is simply worn out. We have uniforms at our school, so it somewhat makes it easier to collect clothing items. Collecting hygiene items has proven more difficult because many people in our community are struggling to provide these items for their own families.
Smelling fresh, clean teeth, and having warm feet are very basic needs that I watch students struggle with on a daily basis. The need for personal hygiene items and warm socks have become painfully apparent as I have witnessed students struggling to take care of these needs and some being ridiculed for not being able to. I've personally witnessed girls not being able to tend to monthly events and wait until they get to school to try and get items from others or teachers. I've heard boys being called out for body odor, knowing that they didn't have deodorant provided to them. It is for this reason that we have decided to add a hygiene section to our closet that will be managed by me personally to avoid embarrassment. I too struggled with these needs as a child and I want students to be able to come to school and concentrate on their education and being able to provide BASIC hygiene items and articles of clothing
