I am in my 16th year of teaching, and I have been at this school my entire career. We are a public elementary school in California, offering many wonderful opportunities and experiences for the student body, such as a strong focus on academics, a music program, various enriching field trips, art and dance classes, and so on. However, our school, like all schools in California, has been hit hard by the enormous budget cuts statewide. We are working to keep up the quality of education and school experience with much fewer resources. When asked what keeps me teaching and motivated at my school site, I always say it is because of the students and their families. The students are eager to learn and work well together. Many have endured personal hardships, from challenging home situations to adjusting to living in a new country. They come from working-class families that are either losing their job or working 2-3 jobs.
