Students are feeling and responding to the trauma of multiple years in a global pandemic. Students need a safe place to manage and monitor their mental health and anxiety. I want my students to have a safe space to be mindful and reset. Research has shown that students who can self regulate emotions are better equipped to access learning and be more successful in the classroom. Having a place to center and reset will result more effective learning. I will designate a place in my classroom as the "calming corner." Students will use the sensory cards and anti anxiety toys to calm and refocus. Headphones will be available for students to check out as needed during independent work time and in the calming corner to listen to calming music and or cancel the background noise of other students. Students will be taught the routines and expectations for using this center during class. The routines will be explicit and the time spent in the corner will be focused and short. Allowing students to return to the whole class instruction.
