My students are predominantly minority and come from a lower income community that had it's school district close a couple years ago. Many of them are ESL, or have other environmental obstacles that have put them a step behind, reading wise, from their peers. They are hard workers and understand the critical need for them to be fluent readers, and they understand the work that is needed to get them there. Like all students from every walk of life, they want to feel successful. Everyday, the inability to read well affects that feeling of success. In my classroom, we are changing that. We are making a difference. They are excited about their growth and the difference it will make in their futures. We talk very openly in my class about what it is like to be who they are and where they are. With that open communication, we are able to set goals that will change the trajectory of their lives. It all begins with reading. They believe that and have bought into this investment.
