My district has just rolled out a new curriculum that relies heavily on computer access. Students can read, annotate, and interact with texts online. They can click on links to dive deeper into a topic. They can thoughtfully respond to prompts, using textual evidence to back up their ideas. After they submit work, they have the opportunity to review their peer's responses anonymously. While the curriculum allows students to read texts and answer questions with paper and pencil, the computer-based tasks really bring the activities to life. Currently, I share one class set of computers with three other teachers. This poses a challenge for me to incorporate technology on a daily basis. Having a few Chromebooks that stay in my room will help my students gain access to important resources for learning. These computers will be especially important for students who are developing English language skills or who struggle because of learning impairments. The computer-based curriculum provides language supports and will read texts aloud to students who can benefit. I'd love to help these students grow by giving them extra tools to help them achieve, and these computers would make that possible.
