One of my students is only reading 21 wpm in second grade. He missed a lot of school last year in 1st grade. He comes from an extensive family that is well known for not caring about education. My second student has already been retained once in 1st grade. His mom believes he is having issues because he was born prematurely. The 3rd student has been struggling ever since he entered school. I think he has low self-esteem, but I know that he has the potential to be successful. We are only in the 4th week of school and he is already taking risks when doing work.
