My school is in a low socioeconomic neighborhood. Most of my students come from single parent homes with no reading enforcement in the home. Over 95% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Most of my students are ADHD children who are reading at least two grade levels below. Reading is not a priority for my students, nor are they interested in the stories provided by the district. My students enjoy lounging on the classroom floor, collaborating with neighbors, but working independently has yet to be established. Although the students face so many challenges, they truly have a desire to learn. The classroom is a safe haven for many students because there is no one to turn to, listen to, and rely on at home. These children have the potential to be successful readers and it is my responsibility to provide them with various opportunities to do so.
