"We are crew, not passengers." ~ Kurt Hahn, founder of Outward Bound. I have a crew of 30 students. I am the captain of the crew, but I cannot sail the ship by myself. They are not content to sit and watch me create; they want the opportunity to man their own creative voyage. Our classroom is their opportunity to be a part of a crew on a journey of discovery. My class is a split grade-level class with 16 fourth-graders and 13 fifth-graders. Many of my students are second language learners and most come from low-income families. They love exploring! My students spend so much time in school on reading, writing, math, science, and social studies, but they really need time to just create! When I allow them to explore with art, they rejoice. They need opportunities to explore with their hands.
