My students go to a traditional high school in an urban area of California. They are all 1st generation students born to immigrant parents from Mexico and Vietnam. My students come from working families and struggle to get access to materials they need to gain skills for college and beyond. My school does not have the resources to buy novels or new textbooks for my students. I feel that "1984" and "Brave New World" are essential novels for my students to read. My students are in a program in which they take college classes and AP high school classes. At the end of the program, they get their high school diploma and they will have completed 1 year of college. They are incredibly hard working, caring people who frequently participate in community service events. They are involved in school government, spirit events, and sports. They do all of this while taking AP and college classes. They love learning and are very interested in current events and making the world a better place.
