Students in our school come from broken-up homes and little stability in their lives. The neighborhood they grow up in is not friendly, their parents or guardians are often away from home and not able to read to them or support them with academics. The achievement gap in our state, Connecticut, is the biggest in the country; children in privileged areas have much, while children in disadvantaged areas such as our school district, struggle to get by with basics. Our school has no supply budget, so our students are not exposed to fun educational materials. Even our libraries are empty or carry old and worn books. How can students be inspired to learn in a world where visual stimulation is all around us, but school days are filled with dull and outdated matter?
