My students are brilliant, passionate, and fearless. They attend school from 7:30-4:00 every day because they are determined to climb the mountain to and through college. They meet our school's incredibly high expectations day in, day out because they have the maturity and self-awareness to see what a college education can provide for them and their families. They have the courage to challenge our society's prevailing wisdom about who students who look like them "should" be. My students are voracious readers, yet we have no school library. My class library is often the only exposure to independent reading materials they have. Our class tracks books completed and my students' eyes light up when they fill in another box on their tracker! They want to read so badly. A fully-stocked library offers 8 book options for every student. I have 90 students. My only hope of providing a wide variety of high-quality, on-level books for my students is to reach out to others who want to help.
