I have 18 energetic, eager to learn first graders. They love school and learning. Their eyes light up as they learn new words and see the world of reading open up to them. Every child has progressed to the stage of reading, with now only a handful reading below grade level. Our school has a low social economic profile. Most of my students receive free or reduced lunch and have few or little resources at home. I have 6 English language learners in my class. Many of my students are of Hispanic or Polynesian descent. Some speak another language at home and some rarely get any conversation at home. This wide range of learners and language abilities makes my job challenging yet rewarding. I love watching their excitement as they tackle the very difficult job of becoming a reader, and in turn using that skill to become a lifelong learner. My goal is to have all of my students reading on grade level at the end of the year.
