My students all come from very hard working low income families. We are a Title I school which means at least 90% of the school population are on free or reduced price lunch. Each student brings a separate, essential ingredient to the model music program recipe and they show me on a daily basis that it is possible to overcome very difficult life situations that not every middle school student goes through. Some students raise their siblings while their parents are at work, and yet still find time to practice 30 minutes a day on their instrument. I feel honored to teach children that know more about life then they should at this age. THEY teach ME and continue to teach me something new about courage every single day. In the midst of many distractions on campus such as fights, disrespect towards teachers, the students in Band and Orchestra are held to a much higher regard by the administration and entire staff of the school. With your help they will continue to defy the odds.
