My public middle school classroom is comprised of English as a Second Language students and Remedial Readers. Most have recently arrived from countries such as Mexico, Korea, China, India, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Bosnia, Serbia, Jordan, Egypt, Palestine, Ecuador, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Guatemala. What they have in common is this: most of their parents do not speak English, and are unable to assist them with reading in English or homework in any subject. All are economically disadvantaged students. They need extra help in vocabulary to fill the gap in their English language learning. The new PARCC standardised tests are requiring the students to read longer texts in every subject and write constructed responses. These students need extra help at school to complete writing and research projects. They need fiction/nonfiction books plus daily news reading materials to improve their language skills.
