Our High School that has a lot of working class families. It has a good number of Hispanic and African American students that are hard working and desire to achieve and do well. For a lot of students, they will be the first to go to college from their families. Sport Medicine student often have a desire to help other in medicine or other pubic service field. My Algebra 1 students are often the kids that historically struggle in math and think "they aren't good at math." I often find they just lack confidence in their skills and/or only lacking one or two skills, but those skills caring over throughout math. As I work w/ my students, I find many are really good at math and just need to have missing skills identified and/or taught using alternative methods. With warm-up and sharing work, I am able to identify and fill the holes in their skills, but more importantly build student confidence in their skill. I constantly say to the kids ... " Trust you instincts" when it comes to math.
