My students are lucky in that we are a wonderfully diverse group living in Southern California. Our school is a Title One school with moderate community support. We are a neighborhood school that also serves some students from outside the community who can find a safe, academic environment at our school. My students works in a vigorous academic environment and they love to challenge each other to do their best work. I love that they come in the morning happy to be at school, happy to see their friends and happy to learn new information. My students are curious and ask a lot of questions, which I encourage. We build reading units around the social studies curriculum as well as the cultural backgrounds of our students. We read in groups and individually, leading to discussions and writing assignments about themes that relate both to the novels' characters, as well as the lives of the students.
