We learn in a k-12 public school in an urban setting. My students come from a wide range of ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds. For a myriad of reasons, our school does not have the same budget as many others in the district. Teachers here spend a great deal of their own money to provide basic literacy materials. This means that my classroom library is a collection of yard sale finds. These books are great for self-selected reading and building fluency but do not allow students opportunities to engage in meaningful, challenging, "Standards-Based" literacy experiences.
