My students are in the process of mastering two languages, English and Spanish. This year, our class goal is to improve our literacy skills in both languages. I aspire to have my students grow 1.6 years of reading in one academic year. This number is significant because my class must achieve more than one year of growth in order to take steps to close the achievement gap. Over one third of my class did not meet state standards in reading comprehension last year. If something is not done to address my students' below grade-level literacy levels, these students are more likely to become disenchanted with their education. My students come from a low socio-economic background. They attend a Title I school in Fort Worth, Texas. As a result, one hundred percent of my class receives free and reduced price lunch. Despite these challenges, my students are some of the most resilient and motivated young people I have ever met. Each day, I am amazed by the level of determination my class exhibits.
