I teach in the San Ramon Unified School District in an excellent high school. There are approximately 2,300 students and 120 faculty. The school sends over 95% of its students to college. The students in my Women's Literature class are a particular delight because the class cuts across all the invisible "lines" that cut across high school culture. In my class you will find AP students, scientists, cheerleaders, culinary arts students, drama kids, artists, musicians, and many, many ethnic groups. The class began last year and was a revelation to many. My favorite question? "Why has no teacher ever talked to us about THIS before?!" My students were referring to Jungian archetypes, Malala Yousafzai, feminism, singing the blues, and oh so many other topics. They are hungry for a new intellectual perspective. The Women's Literature class' thematic focus is much more like current college offerings than the general English classes. They leave better prepared for college and life.
