All children deserve an opportunity to express themselves. Unfortunately, many of the students in my community come from high-poverty, and cannot afford the same supplies and materials as others to do so. These children are raised with music being a significant part of their lives from church to entertainment to family tradition. They should be able to use music as their voice for telling their story. I teach instrumental music at a middle school in South Carolina, in a very high poverty community. roughly 90% of our students are on reduced price or free meals, and our school qualifies for Title 1 status to provide us with necessary funding. I have classes for beginning band, beginning percussion, intermediate band, intermediate/advanced percussion, and advanced band. I also run an after school percussion program for students not in the band program to get involved in.
