My students come from a small, rural area with very little opportunities to experience different cultures. We are at least 75 miles from any art museums or cultural venues. They are inquisitive, but inexperienced. Some have never been outside of our state or even this side of our state. However, they always are interested in learning about other cultures through stories and art projects. Our school is small and rural and has little variety within the student population. Because it is so small, we do not offer many elective classes. Students have to take many of these courses via the Internet, which is very limiting. In order to expose students to different cultures, I try to incorporate stories or art within my units so that students are learning about different cultures during their language arts lessons.
