My 7th grade students are reluctant readers for a variety of reasons. Some of them have a specific learning disability which significantly interferes with their ability to decode and understand text. Other students are disenfranchised learners because they have not met with success in reading fiction. Not surprisingly, my students tend to be those who can never find "just right" books, ones that are interesting yet accessible. My students' "just right" books tend to be fiction that is written for much younger students. My students are embarrassed about carrying these books around, books that identify them as struggling readers.
