Teaching young first graders to write needs to be fun, engaging and full of visuals. By using easel paper that is sticky, it makes it easy to be moved to any wall in the classroom where the information brainstormed on a topic of choice is easily accessible for all students in the classroom. Taking ownership of their own writing journal makes it exciting especially when it is accompanied by a brand new pencil that is easy to grip for little hands. The writing process is no longer just a daily lesson, but a time when students can express themselves and share with their peers. Students become aware of the importance of their own writing journal because it is a special place where they can write about anything and add an illustration. The journal encourages students to go back and look throughout the school year at previous writing to acknowledge how much growth has happened.
