My students are awesome! I teach at a non-selective charter high school in the northern area of a large, urban, Midwestern city. It's free and open to all students, but when there are more applicants than available seats, a lottery is held. We have students come from all over the city, which makes our school culture and environment richly diverse. We have an extremely high SPED population, to which I teach two sections of a general algebra two class (our lowest track where the majority of my students are ELL or have an IEP and require a co-teacher as a direct result of their accommodations). At this level, more so than any other, my greatest challenge is keeping their attention and nothing has helped me more with that than having an ELMO in my classroom. However, as high school students, they love to converse and DO math, not just sit a take notes. So, I try my best to make my lessons interactive, fun, and engaging!
