"I like being in band because it's a relief from the realities of the outside world. You can play your horn and forget about all your problems." Our current Drum Major Our students go to a school that is in the heart of the ghetto, where people sell drugs right across the street and prostitutes loiter on the corner. However, they are some of the most resilient that I have ever encountered, especially since they are the generation that were children during the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina and the aftermath. Although we don't have the best (most of our instruments are falling apart, broken, old, etc.) they find a way to make them work. Our Drum Major, Band Captain and Section Leaders come in before band rehearsal to fix instruments so that the other band members will have something to play on. They are truly a remarkable bunch that knows how to make due in a hard situation.
