I teach math and coach badminton at my school. My AP Calculus AB and BC students have helped change the culture of mathematics learning at our school. In four years, the number of students taking Advanced Placement math courses has more than tripled. This has been the result of student demand for more opportunities to advance academically, particularly in mathematics. Many of the students have worked extremely hard to even make it to calculus in high school. What sets my calculus students apart from most others in my district is the diversity. Approximately half of my AP students are Latino or from other underrepresented minorities in advanced classes. They have challenged the traditional stereotype of who should strive to be a successful AP Calculus. Our badminton family is growing and needs support to provide and upgrade our equipment so that any student that wants to play can play.
