“I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T…do you know what that means?” You may not know that song, but it is a favorite of my first graders and second graders. They sing it often! But more than just sing it, I want it to become a reality in our classroom. I want my students to become independent thinkers, and most importantly, independent workers! I teach a first grade and second grade combination class at an inner city school in Los Angeles. All of my twenty students are English Language Learners. They need a great deal of support to acquire a second language and also to learn how to read. Unfortunately, there is only one of me. Therefore, we are desperate for a learning center that will help support their learning, while also teaching them to work independently.
