My students rely heavily on visuals in order to engage and learn from their environment. Tactile and visual manipulatives are important to improve receptive and expressive language skills during literacy activities. This is why the Storytelling Kit would be so beneficial for my students. They could manually move the story elements to increase comprehension and verbal productions. These would help set up a foundation for literacy skills that are much needed as my students develop their skills. Plus they are super easy to clean and sanitize! My students need a way to communicate when they don't have the verbal skills. This is why I need laminating punches, ink, and velcro. I personally need to create communication books for each of my students in order for them to interact with peers and adults across settings. I create pictures for every communication opportunity such as morning meetings, center time, breakfast and lunch, feelings, answering questions, making choices, etc. It is important to have the visuals in color and laminated in order for the students to use them over and over again. The Soft Feely Box is a great way to build basic vocabulary skills. Once my students learn the labels of items and can identify items the next step is to develop descriptive vocabulary skills. Descriptive vocabulary is an important developmental skill to improve expressive and receptive language skills that my students need to develop.
