With only one middle school in a district that serves over six thousand students, we represent our population well. The seven elementary schools feeding into our building are neighborhood schools situated in very different parts of the district--some affluent and some very far from it. On one end of the district, there are million dollar homes where the parents own more than one luxury car and farmhouses with land that extends beyond the horizon. On the other end, there are dilapidated apartment homes where the parents don't own a car but instead rely on public transportation or their own two feet. In the ten years that I have been at the middle school, the free-and-reduced lunch rate has increased from 51% to 76%. During that same time, I have watched as my class size increased from 24 to 38 students.
