Our school was the first school in our county to begin using the Responsive Classroom and Expeditionary Learning approaches. Both of these styles of learning support the various types of children we have in our diverse elementary school and encourage strong community building. Our students, as well as all children, need certain social skills and positive behaviors taught. They also need strong role models around them and need to see different adults reading and celebrating literacy. There are so many social skills that can be supported through books such as resilience and persistence, making mistakes, honesty, feelings, and respecting differences. Even books that are silly and based on humor have a place in school!
