I recently watched a Ted Talk about an Asian woman who grew up and loved books. Unfortunately, there were very few books that had characters that looked like her. She said that books should be mirrors and windows. Students should be able to pick up a book and see themselves in books (mirrors) but also have opportunities to open up books and be opened to a new world of culture, race, traditions, and family structures (windows). Looking at my book collection and then looking at my student population I was shocked by the amount of books that did not have students of color, different family make-ups, or different cultures or traditions. I want to right that wrong by getting books that have students of color as the main character, books that talk about different types of families, and books that celebrate the wonderful cultures, traditions, and celebrations around the world!
