Speaking and listening are two essential skills in developing language proficiency and part of the foundation of being a proficient reader. For students to be able to read with prosody --the recognition and expression of the patterns and rhythms of written text-- they must listen to text read aloud and practice reading text aloud to make the connections between the written and spoken language. Providing headphones that allow all students to independently listen and speak, with feedback on their speech, will them to develop the skill of prosody --how to recognize and express the pattern and rhythm of written text. This is essential for my many ESL students, and, giving students time to work independently will allow me to pull small groups of students to address their specific learning needs more directly.
