Our 97 6th graders represent 20 countries and speak 8 different languages. Many are very tech savvy but just as many do not have access to technology at home, making school their sole source of Internet access. They come from the most ethnically diverse neighborhood in Chicago composed of mostly poor, working-class families and represent every major religion in the world. However, their lack of resources has not dampened their very eclectic personalities and you will never meet a more talkative, street smart group of kids. The challenge is to use their street smarts as a launching pad to help them become academically smart. No matter what their apprehensions to learning are, being able to use technology to learn seems to bring out a desire to learn that just isn't seen when lessons are taught without technology. Noticing this dynamic, it has become my mission to fill in the technology gaps we currently have as soon as possible. Help me help my students achieve greatness.
